And I didn't expect it - I thought Ellen would go on and find contentment on her own. I did find Louise to be a pretty fascinating character and I loved the scenes of her with her family in France. This is probably my third favorite Whipple of the ones I've read, behind They Were Sisters and Greenbanks. I love the old ladies at the home, and I was so happy that Ellen was going to be there (and Miss Daley) to enjoy their company again - but also help them.

It was your review of They Were Sisters that put it high on my reading list - though I remember it isn't a happy story.Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17782561487396697870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-49615972778477721382015-09-11T22:17:36.178-05:002015-09-11T22:17:36.178-05:00I'm so glad you did, Jennifer - it's nice ...I'm so glad you did, Jennifer - it's nice to meet you! The Priory is waiting on my shelf.

A couple quotes from this book still stick out in my mind... both toward the end, I think.
"These women were old, time had softened them, they had learned something from loss, helplessness, loneliness; they knew almost anything can happen to anybody. They were kinder than when they were young."

"Life is like a sea, sometimes you are in the trough of a wave, sometimes on the crest. When you are in the trough, you wait for the crest, and always, trough or crest, a mysterious tide bears you forward to an unseen, but certain shore."

JoAnnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13691864361197071517noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-36581598717087680932015-09-11T07:07:26.820-05:002015-09-11T07:07:26.820-05:00I felt the same way about the ending. I have Because of the Lockwoods on my shelf waiting to be read. I have never commented before but I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your reviews.Jennifer Leehttp://www.holdsuponhappiness.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.com
