Unlike my response to say any Austen adaptation. But it seems like readers' reactions vary depending on how connected they feel to the original (in my small highly unscientific survey :)Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17782561487396697870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-59657275056981899952015-09-04T14:34:11.043-05:002015-09-04T14:34:11.043-05:00I didn't love some of Park's choices about...I didn't love some of Park's choices about adapting Jane Eyre, but on the other hand, the original is one of my most favorite books of all time. It's possible that no Jane Eyre adaptation has the capacity to please me. :p But I thought it was an interesting book, and I would certainly be interested to read future books by Park.Jenny @ Reading the Endhttp://readingtheend.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-23466930340065280532015-09-04T04:21:31.732-05:002015-09-04T04:21:31.732-05:00The only other fiction I've read set in Korea ...The only other fiction I've read set in Korea is Shin Kyung-sook's Please Look After Mom, which is a very different kind of story! And also in ways that came as a bit of a shock, after I'd been immersed in 19th & early 20th century books. It's interesting how books can strike people so differently, isn't it? I was trying to think which characters I'd feel that way about. Definitely Lymond - I haven't enjoyed any of the "homage" characters, except Elizabeth Peters' "John Smythe."Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17782561487396697870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-23186770715922938072015-09-02T22:07:53.675-05:002015-09-02T22:07:53.675-05:00How interesting, Lark, I had no idea. I knew it got good reviews but sometimes I want to know what a normal reader, so to speak, thinks of something before I pull the trigger. I'm just too attached to Jane as a character to be able to appreciate riffs on her, especially when the updated version seems to lack the original's strength of character. I didn't dislike Park's version of Jane, but I also didn't admire her. There were elements I enjoyed, especially in the earliest chapters, but it wasn't enough to keep me going. (And I don't think I would have loved it if it weren't a Jane Eyre update, but I might have been willing to finish. It's hard to say because I might not have picked it up without that tie-in.)Teresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09896331683344872038noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-41264551015815007252015-09-02T18:33:50.403-05:002015-09-02T18:33:50.403-05:00It's funny how many retellings there are of Ja...It's funny how many retellings there are of Jane Eyre; I've run across several different novels that allude to that classic, some good, some not so good. You could probably spend a month reading different versions of Jane's story. My favorite book that references Jane Eyre has to be Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair. This one sounds fun, too.Lark https://www.blogger.com/profile/13777891312147377769noreply@blogger.com
