Rarely with mysteries, now that I think about it - it's not just a need to know what happens, but as you say against possible traumas.Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17782561487396697870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-6824996850417602412014-02-11T10:55:34.788-06:002014-02-11T10:55:34.788-06:00I've never heard of her let alone read anythin...I've never heard of her let alone read anything by her, so definitely one to add to the tbr list. Oh, and I am so glad I'm not the only one who sometimes has to read ahead to steal myself against any on coming traumas. I'm not as bad about this as a friend of mine who always reads the last chapter of a book before she starts it, but there are times when you just know you've got to go into the second half of a novel forewarned.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-47448041530223252622014-02-10T22:32:15.409-06:002014-02-10T22:32:15.409-06:00Jenny, usually I resist reading the end, but somet...Jenny, usually I resist reading the end, but sometimes with the Victorians I need to know which characters are going to die (of consumption or putrid fevers or childbirth), before I get too attached to them. But then reading the end can be confusing - for a while I thought that Roger fell in love with the sainted Barbara after marrying Nancy! I hope you enjoy Broughton, she is really in a class by herself.Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17782561487396697870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-40424703182033792852014-02-10T20:32:07.868-06:002014-02-10T20:32:07.868-06:00>>I did cheat about a third of the way throu...>>I did cheat about a third of the way through, and read the last chapter, in case I needed to brace myself for a traumatic ending.

Hahahahah, almost every single time I read a book, I do this.

Nancy sounds interesting and strange! I love reading lesser-known authors from this period, especially ladies -- I'm downloading this one from Gutenberg now.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-27997582167260256632014-02-10T06:19:10.258-06:002014-02-10T06:19:10.258-06:00vicki, I'd say this is a good one to start wit...vicki, I'd say this is a good one to start with, even if it's her only happy story! The relationships between the siblings remind me a bit of the book I just finished, Guard Your Daughters, with in-jokes and family traditions so well highlighted.
I also like that both husband and wife are sympathetic characters.
Rhoda Broughton is a very intriguing author!Anbolynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10080054175904900094noreply@blogger.com
