Let me know if you'd like to try this one - but it is not a *happy* Victorian novel!Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17782561487396697870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-26874738774595564272013-09-11T20:43:07.646-05:002013-09-11T20:43:07.646-05:00I've seen Rhoda Broughton's name before, b...I've seen Rhoda Broughton's name before, but didn't know what type of books she wrote. I looked her up on Wikipedia and found this quote from Somerset Maugham, "I remember Miss Broughton telling me once that when she was young people said her books were fast and when she was old they said they were slow, and it was very hard since she had written exactly the same sort of book for forty years". Ha! <br />I'd like to read her just to see if I find her fast or slow ;-)Anbolynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10080054175904900094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-15291808422584269032013-09-08T16:02:57.181-05:002013-09-08T16:02:57.181-05:00Oh yes, elizabeth! But here it isn't a redemption, it's more like a reward, an escape out of life's difficulties to a reunion with lost loved ones.Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17782561487396697870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-62918225771269857012013-09-08T08:06:09.083-05:002013-09-08T08:06:09.083-05:00I love a scandalous Victorian novel! Poor Nell Le Strange sounds like an amped-up Ruby Gillis -- too interested in sex; must be redeemed by a beautiful death.elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17825540813779206354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203893324932668537.post-86217099315798797532013-09-08T07:27:08.963-05:002013-09-08T07:27:08.963-05:00vicki, there are long paragraphs of musing on phil...vicki, there are long paragraphs of musing on philosophy and morals that get a bit convoluted. It is one of my favourite clichés of that era, I do confess. Incidentally, are all the sentences as clause-heavy as that first one you quote? That sort of construction is not my narrative friend! ;-)skiourophilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08200877834536477400noreply@blogger.com
