Reveling in re-reading

I seem to have slipped into Hogwarts.  I was just intending to read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, but three days later I am already deep into The Goblet of Fire.  And my favorite book is up next.  I do have to go to work tomorrow, which will slow the reading down a bit.

It's been a long time since I've re-read these - long enough for them to seem fresh again, and to remind me just how magical I found them the first time (and many times after that).

  1. Aw, how lovely. I reread those books once a year or once every two years at least. It's not usually planned; I just get a yen for them!

Also, I am delighted that the fifth book is your favorite. I feel like it gets a lot of flak from Harry Potter fans (because of how angry Harry is), but I love it ferociously.

  2. Jenny, your recent post on Fangirl was one of the things that got me thinking it was time to re-read - and also a friend who's re-reading as well.

  3. Don't you love it when that happens? I remember getting sucked into rereading favorite books when I was in college--talk about your guilty pleasures :)

Enjoy your visit to Hogwarts--what a great world Rowling created!

  4. I usually never re-read, but I feel the HP books are ones that I should some day - I get them all mixed up in my head and it would be nice to go back and set it all straight again.

  5. They do stand up to re-reading, though my favourites are the first two, I think. Each time I open them (and not for a while now -- long overdue!) I remember how charmed (oh, good choice of word, Vicki!) I was by them the first time.

  6. Jane, it was perfect timing, with the long holiday weekend, and nothing planned. I haven't had a nice reading binge like this in a while :)

Anbolyn, I have to space out my re-readings, or books can become too familiar & lose their magic. This was obviously the right time for Harry Potter though!

vicki, I discovered the series just after The Chamber of Secrets was published - back where there were only two, hard to remember! I read the first one twice in a row, I was so delighted with it.

  7. Don't you love rereading a favorite and having it still feel fresh and wonderful? I love the Harry Potter books; they take you to this magical world...and once there, I never want to leave! Hmm...maybe I should pull them off my shelf and reread them this summer. :) Great post.

  8. Lark, that's how it started with me, I took The Philosopher's Stone off the shelf, and here I just had to tear myself away from The Order of the Phoenix :) At this rate, I think I'm set all the way through to the Deathly Hallows.

  10. Thank you, Susan - it was a lovely birthday, in spite of the torrential rains :)

  11. Me too! I finally bought my own set of Harry Potter at the beginning of May, and then raced through 6 books in 2 weeks, though I had initially planned to save them until I had the time to relish the re-read. I'm now reluctantly keeping aside the seventh book because the thought of not spending time with these characters and in this world for a few years (until I forget enough to re-read) makes me feel bereft.

  12. Thanks for stopping by, Sharanya! I stopped with Half-Blood Prince, partly because I couldn't face the Dumbledore situation - but I also felt a bit bereft.

  13. I just started re-reading this series, too, and am loving it once again! It's a wonderful way to start my summer reading!

  14. Robin, I first read The Philosopher's Stone in the summer, and then each new book came out around the same time - so I definitely think of these as summer books! I hope you enjoy your re-reading.

  15. I loved the Harry Potter series! Only read it once, but I'm thinking this autumn when I've finished one of my big reading projects it may be time to revisit. :)

  16. o, thanks for stopping by! I don't know if "re-readability" is actually a word, but it's one of my main criteria in deciding whether to keep a book - and the Harry Potters are definitely re-readable.

Thank you for taking the time to read, and to comment. I always enjoy hearing different points of view about the books I am reading, even if we disagree!
